Smoke Alarms
What to know
In 2017, the Queensland Government introduced new legislation mandating new requirements for the installation of smoke alarms. Listed below are the new/updated requirements.
All dwellings must have a smoke alarm installed in each bedroom, and all hallways which connect bedrooms and the rest of the dwelling. Or if there is no hallway, between the bedrooms and other parts of the storey.
If there are no bedrooms on a storey at least one smoke alarm must be installed in the most likely path of travel to exit the dwelling.
The smoke alarms must be interconnected so they all activate together.
All smoke alarms must be photoelectric complying with AS 3786-2014 and cannot contain an ionisation sensor.
The smoke alarms must be hardwired (230V) or powered by a non- removalable 10-year battery, or a combination of both may be allowed.
Following this legislation, all smoke alarms must be installed and compliant within dwellings that are leased, being sold, or an existing lease that is renewed before 01 January 2022. This includes holiday rentals, Airbnb’s, long term apartment rentals and any dwelling sold after 01 January 2022.
For all other dwellings, the compliance date is 01 January 2027. This includes owner occupied houses and apartments.
